TRAVEL FUNDS FOR THE CONFERENCE AND WORKSHOP

The US National Science Foundation has approved a grant that will support travel, room, and board at the International Photoacoustic and Photothermal Conference in Cairo.  The purpose of the grant is to make possible a workshop at the conference where collaboration between American scientists and scientists in the Middle East in photoacoustics and photothermal science can be initiated.

The support is for American scientists but includes scientists who are part of the American research effort.  Thus foreign students enrolled in a university in the United States or those who are working in companies carrying out research on the subjects covered in the conference are eligible.  The NSF is particularly interested in supporting young scientists, women, and minorities.  A small percentage of the grant funds may be awarded to Middle Eastern scientists to make possible their attendance in exceptional cases.

American researchers can send their curriculum vitae and an abstract of research that would be presented to the conference to Gerald_Diebold@Brown.edu.  Middle Eastern scientists can apply to Hassan Talaat at talaat@icppp.org.

Note: Travel on American “air carriers” is required.  That is, the ticket must be purchased from an airline from the United States such as United Air Lines, American Airlines, US Airlines, Delta Airlines, etc.  If the actual airplane used for the flight is a foreign carrier that has cooperative arrangements with a United States airline company, that is acceptable, however the ticket must be purchased from the American airline.

Deadline for applying for the travel funds will be October 31, 2006

Announcement regarding the US-Egyptian workshop

In addition to the talks which will be presented mostly on Tuesday Jan. 9, the US Egyptian Workshop has a second day scheduled for group and individual discussions between the US and Middle Eastern scientists, which will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 10 (i.e. after the conference). The aim is to get a more detailed idea about ongoing research and existing plans in order to explore the possibilities for joint research projects.

Following requests for such opportunities the organizers are glad to open that informal part to all conference participants. On Wednesday Jan. 10, There will be a guided tour to the NILES (National Institute for Laser Enhanced Science) Laser Research Center at Cairo University and offer ample time for further discussion with colleagues.

Everybody is most welcome to join the workshop on that day.
